Re: Restructuring the divisions
Hi JJ, Talking about problems that are probably not as big as they look, I think that this also applies to the health & safety issue and the possibility of litigation. My impression has been that generally speaking judges in the UK have not gone down the American route and have thrown out obviously...

Re: Restructuring the divisions
I am assuming by this you are meaning to split the sport into adults and juniors? After all you can't possibly mean making the sport more dangerous for kids? Surely??? Hi Debs, slalom is already dangerous, if there was no danger there would be no thrill for many. I think there is a limit to how muc...

Re: Restructuring the divisions
Sorry JJ but I totally disagree with 'sanitising' natural rivers just to make them 'safe' for slalom. The vast majority of the people that run the Dee and Town Falls are recreational river runners during the course of a year and part of the experience of running Town Falls is avoiding the slot or w...

Re: Restructuring the divisions
There seams to be several discussions going on hear. I agree with JJ. We should bring back events like Llangollen. I recon I raced there for at lest 27 years, in Div1, Prem and British Open. With not a singe incident. Swam the length of it when I changed to C2. Have we all got soft. It's all linked...

Re: Restructuring the divisions
[quote] Dave Brad....As I understand it we probably won't have a race on Town Falls again because of safety concerns, but I am reasonably sure that Llangollen Town Council would have us back in a flash if we could find a way around it./quote] I think that the Town falls is a great site that has not ...

Re: Restructuring the divisions
The extortionate prices being charged by some slalom venues is obviously becoming a large factor in limiting the slalom training and events that can be held at them. These courses have been built on the back of slalom competition and money from slalom funding bodies has been used to build them. Now ...

Re: Restructuring the divisions
I am not sure how promotion and demotion works now, but it used to be by looking at larger gaps in points obtained in each division and then also considering how many people were viable for each division in terms of a club organising a event and not loosing money.

Re: Restructuring the divisions
Hi Jim W. I do not think I explained myself well enough. When I wrote my comments below I was thinking that with the lack of race places especially in Div one that it may be better to keep some classes smaller than others if there are large gaps in performance within a class. I am sure in time class...

Re: Restructuring the divisions
It's a difficult problem and being a non paddler I wouldn't no where to start. As a parent I have concerns about the speed at which juniors are coming up through the division's. To me it's far too quick. Particularly from 2 to 1. To me the point of a divisional system is that paddlers work their wa...

Re: Restructuring the divisions
Dave said at the start of this debate that "We have a serious problem with division 1, is too big, there is no way that everyone that wants to race in that division can get an entry to the majority of races." It seems what Dave stated is certainly true. One answer is to restrict the number of paddle...

Re: design the gate
For my own admission , I was once given a very big compliment by a section judge at a Grandtully event. As I approached the main drop I was caught by a boil and was pushed to one side of a downstream gate on which the judge was in line with which made it difficult to see both poles. I finished the ...

Re: design the gate
Dave, you mentioned... "I got my best ever result in a kayak some years ago by deliberately paddling into a pole to move it and gain a minimum of 5 seconds advantage over the rest of the field who hadn't spotted this option. Although it was really deliberate displacement it wouldn't be caught by the...

Re: design the gate
In both the high jump and pole-vaulting athletics events there are sometimes cases where the bar is moved by a athlete touching it but it does not dislodge and the athlete is deemed to have cleared the bar. Various records are often set in this way, including the current mens high jump World record ...
