Re: 6.5 Introduction of a new, plastic boat event

I agree with Jim. As a paddler of nearly 30 years who has always had one foot in slalom and the other in river running, the perennial argument that I got, and still get, from river runners is the paucity of water time. Why drive several hours with the associated costs in terms of petrol, accommodati...

Re: 6.6 Carry Points Forward for 2022

Carrying points forward to next season is also quite frankly unfair to all those who, for various reasons, were unable to race in 2020 and 2021. The raison d'être for carrying 2020 points forward into 2021 was that there were so few races in the former season that both years were combined into one s...

Re: Advice on replacing grab loops

Thanks for the advice chaps. I think I'll try JFNG's method first as it's a lot less drastic than yours Jim!

Cheers,
James

Advice on replacing grab loops

Hi all, The grab loops in both the bow and the stern of my boat have worn through (not a good idea to thread boat straps through them while travelling), but I'm stumped trying to work out how to replace them, especially the one in the stern. Any advice on how to do this would be gratefully received....

Re: John Sturgess

Sad news indeed. We've had many conversations bankside in recent years on the subject of lower division participation and John had no compunction about ticking me off, in the most constructive of ways, for my poor performances in div 2! His presence will be missed at slaloms, especially by those you...

Re: Annual Consultative Meeting and back to racing discussion

The most likely explanation for the 2014 upturn in numbers of ranked paddlers was the significant tick up in entry level (div 4) participation in 2013, which led to a 45% increase in promotees to div 3, which would probably have fed through into ranked numbers the following year. I've assumed that t...

Re: Abandoning the season?....

In terms of focussing on entry level competition, it may be helpful if I provide some high level figures. In 2010, the total number of people who competed in a division 4 slalom in K1M, K1W, and C1M (there are no figures for C1W before 2013) over the season, was 773. This had fallen to 482 by 2019, ...

Re: Abandoning the season?....

Once again, I have to agree with Jim W. The 2020 season is lost and we need to forget about it and move on. Unfortunately a lot of the discussion on this thread has focussed on the fact that a few paddlers who managed to race at the start of this season may have lost out on promotion, largely from D...

You disappoint me Dee. I've always believed that Captain Marvel was in the Chair, ably assisted by his sidekicks Batman and Robin!

Re: Abandoning the season?....

I agree Jim. Any decent youngster who has continued to train so far this year and continues to do so will very likely get promoted pretty quickly in the early part of next season anyway. Much more critical will be the lower end of the sport. Entry level participation has been on a falling trend sinc...

Abandoning the season?....

Given that more than half the season has now been cancelled, is it time to consider biting the bullet and abandoning the season altogether? That doesn't mean that localised races couldn't be run, just that they would no longer be ranking events. This would provide clarity and allow officials, organi...

Re: Calendar

Thanks Humphr, I can view the slalom calendar through the link you have sent. Terry, what options come up for you when you go into safari>settings for this website? I only get a dialogue box with two options to turn on or off - Use reader when available and Enable content blockers and turning either...

Re: Symonds Yat Sunday cancelled

Absolutely agree Dave. We will continue to support the Symonds Yat slalom by coming along for as long as you're prepared to run them Alison - despite my absolutely appalling performance in the one run we were able to get in on Saturday!

Cheers,
James
