Re: Officials Ranking Complier needed!

I think you are too nice/lenient/generous! I think it is brilliant that you do this at all - thanks for doing it for so long! The officials ranking system is designed to favour those who help out most often and the points system is adequate to reward frequent helpers of different abilities on a kind...

Re: Vet getting too many points

I think Ship has a valid point. As Paul has explained, because all vets are ranked together the bonus points are there so that vets cpable of scoring at higher division races are able to outscore vets racing at lower division races, when their actual score within the higher division is so low that t...

Re: Vet getting too many points

I don't worry about vet points any more, just like to see where I come against the other vets on the day.

If I cared about the points I would be racing in lower divisions, but I like the challenge of harder courses and accept that sometimes I won't score at all.

Thanks for all the feedback (by email and FB, not being sarcastic) - the team race is a go!

Tully Div 1 - Teams?

There has been much lamentation about reduction in numbers racing in Div 1 (and other divisions) this year, and Tully next weekend looks set to follow the pattern with just over 100 entries to squeeze into the time we usually cope with 200 entries. This means we have options and flexibility in timin...

Re: Jumping the starter.

Beam Timing at lower divisions. Technically there is no problem, go for it! You will need to understand a few things, and there are some little complications but not as serious as may seem. Lets start with the myths (sorry CeeBee, you answered so you get quoted) Even if we had beams, these are not e...

Re: Jumping the starter.

When I read the title I thought this was going to be about the rule that you are supposed to start within 5 seconds (either way) of your start time / when the starter's countdown gets to zero. But actually it is about something else :D Obviously course designers should be familiar with the rules for...

Re: Too few indispensible volunteers

I had this very discussion a few years ago with a member of BC Slalom committee but they were not in favour at that time. It is something we have done at the Scottish Schools events. However, I can understand the reluctance of newbies to judge at Prem/Div 1 as it can be quite intimidating judging p...

Re: Is it time for some outside the box thinking?

I'm gutted about the loss of 2 more races, although my wallet probably isn't. Actually 3 more - Seaton Park 3/4 has gone too. There is no doubt the loss of div 2 races in the north contributed to our record entry for Pinkston 2/3 despite the enhanced entry fee I set on the expectation of about 2/3 t...

Re: Div 4 Organisers

This works wonderfully when Simply Slalom works for you. I reccommend all organisers obtain a copy in advance (email slalom chair) and set up a dummy competition in it and make sure they can add results and crucially calculate the results/points at the end of the day. In Scotland we are seeing probl...

Re: Too few indispensible volunteers

I think Hexham CC used to run with 2 or 2.5 people in control, certainly when I helped out Julie did start/finish and I clerked for all judge positions, and although Mike was around I'm not sure he was really doing anything directly just staying clear to sort out tech issues if they occurred, and Ch...

Re: Is it time for some outside the box thinking?

Interesting discussion on facebook just now too - I think we need to re-visit the boat definitions and/or when to apply them to see if we can encourage greater participation.

Re: Too few indispensible volunteers

I have to admit to putting out a whatsapp message this morning desperately asking for 1 more judge so we could start the racing, fortunately we had extra cafe helpers releasing a paddling official from cafe to judge. There is another way for race organisers to get points/rewards which I'm sure Dunca...

Re: Is it time for some outside the box thinking?

Some will get more points, some fewer. Adding more paddlers to the calculation changes the step size for the points difference between places so at the top end paddlers (host and PU) except 1st will make a gain, and the lower end they will lose. If you only concentrate on the promotion end it is eas...
