I think the only answer would actually be a camera above each pole (like Russ's idea), you forget that poles can be moving and that the gate line moves with it. The camera therefore has to be placed such that it can be judged whether the head and part of the boat passes correctly through the gate l...

"DJ - I measured the course on Google Earth and it seems shorter than Cardington! I think you are trying to use the 1970's style psyching of the competition here! I am not going to fall for that :-) Erm...unless it starts 400m above and finished 400m below the main drop in true 1970's style! Gulp!"...

"Peter Parker - 12 gate courses are plenty long enough!"

You will enjoy the giant slalom then!

It appears Nick has just linked to the wrong web site. A simple mistake or confusion for a busy web master. It is as far as I know simply a club putting on an event which mainly attracts competitors from countries in that region. Last year a number of brits went along (12 I think). I think that sur...

You just need to send Jim your details and your £5 and he will sort out your entry. Worked sweet as a nut last year. If you need any details for the event let me know as I went last year. Training Thursday Giant Slalom Friday (6 gates, 2 of which are ups as I remember), sprint course basically with...

"I'm sorry to disagree but when 30% of the men and 70% of the women get at least one 50 over their two runs it seems that a large proportion of the division do not have the skills required to compete at this level on a straight forward course with no real challenges other than the water itself." I ...

I did my best to eat all the cake, sorry to have left you with such an onerous task!

(Actually it was a subtle ploy to slow you down a bit).

"Slaloms are very expensive to attend and knowing that you are going for what would be effectively no purpose makes it even less value for money." which is exactly why I can understand some people getting very annoyed when they are beaten by someone who deliberately misses a gate and even more when...

There is a rule that all gates must be done in the correct sequence (20.something?) and another rule in the disqualification section that says if a paddler attempts to win by unfair means they can be disqualified. I haven't a rule book with me at the mo and can't remember the exact rule text and nu...

Its very hard to look at results and say someone was quicker or not when they got a 50 and derive some useful metrics from that. The fact that they got the 50 (half head or non attempt) means that their time will generally be quicker than the paddler who completed the gate correctly. People will so...

If you expect to be rescued surely it is only courtesy to know how to rescue others? There is a safety assessment its called the Foundation Safety & Rescue Training. There is one advertised on the slalom web site at the moment. Your local bcu rep should be able to advise where this is one near you....

PS. The proposed 50 rule is not hard for a computer program to figure out, it would simply mean sorting by number of 50's first and then their time/points total rather than just the time/points total. Its a pretty simple change.

The ranking system does not unfortunately work regarding speed of paddlers. I was promoted to Div 2 at the end of the season and did (as I remember) the last race (or perhaps two) at the end of the season, thus I was ranked with people who had done a full season and achieved the same points. The re...
