I have found some ancient footage of slalom on the british pathe web site. It's a bit of hard work to get the film though.

I have only seen the first one, the Marsh Lock Canoe Race, and it was very compressed. Top billing goes to:

The commentator talking about canoe "slaylem"

No one wearing a helmet, and the commentator saying that they all wear lifejackets to protect them in case they get a bang on the head (!)

The rule that all boats must be folding

Thanks for the link Dave.

I watched the Shepperton one (as boily as ever) and the Llangollen one.

At the Llangollen slaylem, the spectators were standing on the rocks below the bridge arches! It seemed to be a few years later and at least the paddlers were wearing helmets.
